Course objectives:Following completion of the course, participants should be able to:• Recognize the importance of multidisciplinary management of patients with infection and bone loss.• Become familiar with the techniques of bone defect reconstruction and particularly the Masquelet and bone transport techniques. • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of bone loss treatment options and decide which technique would be the best for the patient’s specific needs.• Become familiar with RIA bone graft harvesting and the versatility of the RIA cage.• Become familiar with risk factors and patient comorbidities predisposing to the development infection.• Perform an appropriate assessment of the patient with bone infection either acute or chronic.• Recognize and apply the criteria for the diagnosis of ‘fracture related infection’.• Appreciate the impact of ‘biofilm’ in bone infection development.• Develop a comprehensive plan for eradication of bone infection based on the state of the bone, needs of the patient, the patient factors, and the available surgical options.
