Detailed Description

We are pleased to announce the 2025 Sinophone Research Forum, hosted by University of Leeds and HKCAL@UK. Building on the success and momentum of HKCAL@UK's inaugural gathering in Sheffield last year, this year’s conference promises to be another engaging event for scholars, educators, and enthusiasts of the Sinophone world.

Drawing on Shih Shu-mei's definition of the Sinophone as a network of places where Sinitic-language cultures are produced, this event will explore the rich diversity and decentralised nature of Sinophone communities. These communities, while sharing common cultural roots, have developed distinct identities through the production and circulation of cultural, artistic, and linguistic artifacts.

The forum will challenge simplistic equivalences among language, culture, ethnicity, and nationality and will explore the complexities of migration, identity formation, and the intersections of culture, arts, and languages within Sinophone contexts.
